A 40 ft container holds roughly 20–24 standard pallets. De-vanned and floor-stored in a single layer, that is about 300–600 sq ft including working clearance. Racked two or three levels high, the same container's freight occupies roughly 150–250 sq ft of floor area. A 20 ft container holds about 10–11 pallets and needs proportionally less.
Pallet counts by container
A 40 ft standard container fits about 20 pallets at 48x40 in on a single layer, or up to 24 with 40x48 in orientation and tight loading. A 20 ft container fits about 10–11. A 40 ft high-cube holds the same floor count but allows taller pallets.
Floor-loaded containers change everything
Floor-loaded cartons typically yield more pallets than the container's nominal pallet count once palletized, because the goods were loaded without pallet footprint constraints. Plan for 10–25% more pallet positions than the standard count, and budget the palletizing labor.
Do not size a warehouse per container
What matters is how many containers are in the building at once: a function of monthly container volume and average dwell time. Six containers a month at 30 days dwell needs the same standing space as twelve containers a month at 15 days.
